What is a cookie?

A "cookie" is a small amount of information that a web site sends to your browser. A cookie can help a web site identify you the next time you visit. For instance, if you shop for books online, the bookstore's web site might use a cookie to store information about your favorite subjects, and later use that information to recommend particular books.
There are two types of cookies. A saved cookie and a session cookie.
A saved cookie is one that is saved to your hard drive for later retrieval by a web site. This type of cookie is usually used to store information relevant to the user (eg. What the user ordered last time they browsed a web site) for the web site to retrieve the next time the user browses the web site.
A session cookie is one that is stored temporarily while the user browses the web site. Once the user closes their browser the cookie is deleted.
